POSITION QUALIFICATION

Applicant for position with the Jacksonville Police Department Must:

  • Be 20 years of age or older upon date of employment.
  • Pass a medical examination.
  • Be a citizen of the United States.
  • Be a high school graduate or possess and equivalency certificate.
  • Possess a valid North Carolina driver's license.
  • Have no convictions of a felony or serious misdemeanor.
  • Submit to a thorough background investigation.
  • Appear before an interview board.
  • Be willing and able to undergo strenuous physical training.

APPLICATION INFORMATION

Interested persons must complete an application for employment and personal history information form (F-3). The F-3 form must be notarized. All applicants are photographed and fingerprinted when they return the completed application form. The following items of information must be copied and submitted by the applicant with the completed application.

  • Birth Certificate.
  • High School Diploma.
  • DD-214 (if applicant was in military).
  • Transcript of most recent education.
  • Copy of N.C. Driver's License and Social Security Card

SELECTION PROCESS INFORMATION

The hiring of personnel by the Police Department is based on filling vacant positions allocated by the City Council.

The Police Department will perform the following screening process of applicants that meet the essential requirements for employment in the following order:

  • A thorough background investigation.
  • A polygraph examination administered by a certified polygraph examiner from the Police Department.
  • An oral interview before a board of staff officers of the Police Department. The interview will consist of standardized, job related questions that were obtained by the Police Department from the N.C. Employment Security Commission.
  • A complete physical examination by a physician retained by the Police Department.
  • A psychological evaluation of the applicant by a certified psychologist retained by the Police Department.
  • A complete eye examination by a certified optometrist retained by the Police Department.

It is the policy of the Jacksonville Police Department that all candidates for employment be informed, in writing, of all elements of the selection process and information as to what candidates may do if they fail on any part of the selection process. Applicants who were not disqualified for failing to meet the minimum standards for Police Officers as set by the N.C. Criminal Justice Training and Education Standards Commission, may be retested after review by the Chief of Police and upon request by the affected applicant.

Applicants not appointed to probationary status on the basis of a single test, examination, or interview will be informed, in writing, of the specific reason within thirty (30) calendar days.

Applicants not selected by the Jacksonville Police Department within ninety (90) days of submission of their formal application, must update their application to be considered for future employment.

Compensation:

Successful applicants will be employed as Police Officer I with a starting annual salary of $33,829 - $54,126 .

Upon hiring the Jacksonville Police Department provides an additional 504 hours of supplemental training pertaining to agency policy and procedures.

The probationary period for newly appointed personnel is one (1) year, subject to extension in accordance with the city personnel code.

Thereafter the officer will be eligible for normal salary increases on an annual basis.

Employee improvement increases may be awarded on the basis of above standard performance.
