POSITION QUALIFICATION
Applicant for position of Telecommunicator I must:
- Have a high school diploma or equivalency.
- Have no convictions of a felony or serious misdemeanor and be of good personal character.
- Be able to pass a reading comprehension, vocabulary, and spelling test.
- Be able to operate general office and data entry equipment.
- Be able to follow written and oral instructions.
- Be able to establish and maintain effective working relationship with associates.
APPLICATION INFORMATION
Interested persons must complete an application for employment and personal history information form (F-3). The F-3 form must be notarized. The following items of information must be copied and submitted by the applicant with the completed application.
- Birth Certificate.
- High School Diploma.
- DD-214 (if applicant was in military).
- Copy of N.C. Driver's License and Social Security Card
SELECTION PROCESS INFORMATION
The hiring of personnel by the Police Department is based on filling vacant positions allocated by the City Council. The Police Department will perform the following screening process of applicants that meet the essential requirements for employment in the following order:
- A thorough background investigation.
- Undergo a personal interview
- A test for reading comprehension, vocabulary, and spelling skills.
- Submit to a drug screen test.
- A psychological evaluation of the applicant by a certified psychologist retained by the police department.
Applicants who were not disqualified for failing to meet the minimum standards for Police Officers as set by the N.C. Criminal Justice Training and Education Standards Commission, may be retested after review by the Chief of Police and upon request by the affected applicant.
Applicants not appointed to probationary status on the basis of a single test, examination, or interview will be informed, in writing, of the specific reason within thirty (30) calendar days.
Applicants not selected by the Jacksonville Police Department within ninety (90) days of submission of their formal application, must update their application to be considered for future employment.

Successful applicants will be employed as Telecommunicator I with a starting annual salary of $27,831.00. The probationary period for newly appointed personnel is one year. After one year, the employee is evaluated to determine if they will become a permanent employee. Thereafter the employee will be eligible for normal salary increases on an annual basis. Employee improvement increases in salary my be awarded on the basis of above standard performance.
