Beautification and Appearance

The Jacksonville Beautification and Appearance Commission is an advisory board appointed by the Jacksonville City Council to advise them on beautification issues and landscaping matters. The Commission was established in 1976 and has created a number of successful projects.

downtown residence, Jacksonville, NC One of the first programs developed by the Commission was the Memorial Tree Program. This provides a means whereby family members and friends can have trees planted in memory of a deceased friend or loved one. A tree can also be planted in honor of a special occasion such as the birth of a child or grandchild, or a marriage, or a myriad of other occasions. Acknowledgment cards are sent to the donor and to the family of the honoree or memorial. Additional information on this program can be obtained by contacting the Parks Deparment  at 910 938-5250. Donations for memorial trees can be sent to the Jacksonville Beautification and Appearance Commission, P.O. Box 128, Jacksonville, North Carolina 28541. Please include the name of the person being remembered and a family address to which a notification card can be sent.

Another program that has been of interest to residents has been our Champion Tree Program. The nation has its Champion trees and the State has its Champion trees. It was only fitting that the City of Jacksonville have a Champion Tree program. Perhaps our champions are eligible for state or national recognition. The judgment criteria are the height of the tree, the circumference and the size of the crown of branches.

In order to bring additional color to our streets, the Beautification Commission sponsors planting beds which can be adopted by civic or garden groups to plant and maintain. As beds are added to the program, new volunteer groups are always welcome. Call 910 938-5250 for information.

The Residential and Business Yard of the Month is a program which is conducted in the spring through fall in which the Commission recognizes well landscaped residences and businesses. Vist the Yard of the Month page for more information.

MEMORIAL TREE

Plant a tree in memory of an individual or group, in honor of someone, or to commemorate special events, such as births, graduations or anniversaries. The donor receives a card acknowledging the gift and the honoree receives notification of the tree planting.

Please make checks payable to the Jacksonville Beautification and Appearance Commission. Your contribution will be used for the continued planting of dogwood, crepe myrtle or other suitable trees. For your information the average cost of a 15’ tall tree is $50.
