City Planning

Downtown Jacksonville, NC

City, or Community Planning involves answering three basic questions in a continuous process.
  • What kind of City are we now?
  • What kind of City do we want to be in the future? How do we become that City in the future?
What kind of City Jacksonville is today and will be in the future is determined by goals set forth by the community, elected/appointed officials and City staff. The City of Jacksonville has been established by a study of the existing conditions using the “road map” or plan followed to accomplish goals for the future.  Without a plan or road map, the City could not grow in an efficient or effective way.

Long Range Goals

An element of the City’s planning effort is to develop a road map that has broad community support and a clear direction. The plan is presented in several different documents including, the Coastal Area Management Act, the Comprehensive Plan, the Growth Management Element. Each document represents a part of the City of Jacksonville's long range focus, or, the future of the City.
