Nanofiltration-Cleaner than BottledThe City of Jacksonville operates the City’s wells, storage facilities, water treatment and pumping facilities in order to provide an adequate, reliable, safe and palatable water supply to the community.  Using Nanofiltration, The City's new water plant provides drinking water that meets higher standards than that of bottled water. This new plant has the capability for desalination if needed to help in producing water that is palatable. 

Objectives for producing
palatable and safe Drinking Water:

  • To operate the Water Supply System in compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act and State Regulations.
  • To Promote OSHA compliance among employees.
  • To maintain the City’s Water Plant, well system and elevated tanks in order to provide efficient operation.
  • To run all laboratory analyses in accordance with EPA approved methodology.

The City's newest Water Treatment Plant uses a system called nanofiltration which safely removes undesirable organics, salts and contaminates that may have bad tase. During the filtration process, unwanted  particles are collected for disposal.

Studies show that bottled water contains more contaminates than water processed with nanofiltration. Nanofiltration is an advanced treatment method that can also reduce salt levels & eliminate contaminants that older methods can not treat. Tap water must also undergo stringent FDA mandated testing. The FDA exempts bottled water companies from many of these tests.

Large Particulate Removal Lines Getting Water To the Plant
Only Water from the Castle Hayne Aquifer is pumped to this Water Treatment Plant. Water is drawn through 24" lines from shallow wells. The plant can process up to 4 million gallons of water daily. 

Incoming water is treated with an antiscalent, a safe chemical that protects filters from buildup. Water initially passes through filters that remove large particles from the water. A plant employee checks the filters during routine maintenance. (left)

 
Computerized Control Room Station Control Center
The Water Treament Plant uses a computerized monitoring system that allows the plant manager and staff to monitor and control the performance of water filtration during all stages of treament. 
water testing lab Quality Testing
Water is tested in the lab for quality control. Testing is conducted at all stages of treatment and filtration for evaluation of:
  • Chlorine Residuals
  • Ortho Phosphates
  • Dissolved Oxygen
  • pH Levels 
Lab testing helps to determine the quality of the water coming into the plant from the Caaslte Hayne Aquifer and water that has been treated at the plant. 
 
Water Treatment Plant- Final Stage Filtration Towers Final Treatment 
After the Nanofiltration process is complete, water is treated with a Bio Scrubbing system which uses a safe chemical to eliminate any naturally occuring ododrs that remain. After odor removal, water is disinfected, conditioned and the pH is adjusted.  Thoroughly cleansed water is held in a 2 million gallon container before deistribution.

The City celebrated the  Opening of the Water Treament Plant on August 3, 2011. Residents, Business and Community leaders were in attendance to see City Council and the Mayor 'turn on the taps'. Ray Holder, Plant Manager welcomes guests (left). Mayor ProTem, Lazzara and Councilman Warden take a tour of the plant.

 
Water Tower Drinking Water Quality Report
Each year, the City publishes as annual report on water quality for the City of Jacksonville. The Annual Drinking Water Quality Reports. These reports are available for public view.
